The English and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
