Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
